After diving, many divers enjoy excursions to nearby cities and natural reserves such as the cities of Cienfuegos and Trinidad, El Nicho Falls, and the Fortress of Jagua.
Excursion to Cienfuegos City
The city of Cienfuegos, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is located 18 km or 11 miles from Faro Luna. The only city in Cuba founded by the French under Spanish rule in 1819, Cienfuegos features unique architecture and sits by the waters of the Bay of Jagua, or Bay of Cienfuegos. Excursions are focused on two areas: the historic city center, where the city was founded, and the Punta Gorda residential area, a peninsula area within the bay, where you will find the Jagua Hotel, the Palacio de Valle, the Cienfuegos de la Marina Club, and other places of interest. We usually end the tour by dining at some of the best restaurants in the city.
Trinidad City Tour:
The city of Trinidad de Cuba, also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is located approximately 70 km or 50 miles from Faro Luna, was the third village founded by the Spanish crown in Cuba, in early 1514. It is one of the best preserved colonial sites in the Caribbean, with cobblestone streets and original architecture. We usually visit La Casa del Alfarero, where they have worked ceramics for more than 5 generations, then we visit the Mirador del Valle de los Ingenios (another UNESCO World Heritage site), and return to the city where you can enjoy a tour through the city and a delicious dinner in the city.
Excursion to Protected Area El Nicho
El Nicho is a natural and protected park that is located in the mountains approximately 60 km or 37 miles from Faro Luna. Its main attraction is the fresh water waterfalls in the heart of the Sierra del Escambray. We go on a hike in the mountains of about 800 m or just under 500 miles, where you can enjoy the Cuban flora and fauna. The hike includes a cool, refreshing swim in the crystal clear waters of the El Nicho River. There’s also a 5-line zip lining trip that passes over the river and offers beautiful views of its waterfalls. At the waterfalls, we will have a typical Cuban lunch. This is a full-day trip, and it is done in a day without diving, as the park is located at altitude.
Excursion to the Fortress of Jagua:
The fortress of Jagua is a Spanish castle that was founded in 1745 to defend the Bay and a large part of the south coast of the island from pirate ships. Today, it is a museum that keeps centuries of history: while its architecture is European in origin, it’s adapted to its local environment. You can see several archaeological objects from the entrance to the bay and the moat of the fortress. After the museum, you can decide whether to take a short boat tour of the bay. Dinner will be at a restaurant located in a small fishing village on the other side of the bay channel.
All activities above are guided and include all transportation. If you are accompanied by someone who does not dive, there are activities for non-divers during the day:
Dolphinarium:
Beside our dive centre, there is a dolphinarium that offers 2 daily shows, one at 10 am and another at 2 pm. It also offer swim and interact with dolphins. There’s also a water park. Please note that the dolphinarium is closed on Wednesdays.
Guanaroca Bird Reservoir:
The Laguna Guanaroca protected area, located approximately 8 km or 5 miles from Faro Luna, is a bird watching site, where you can observe pink flamingos, among other bird species. It is sometheing you need to do in te morning, the first groups starts at 8am and have more chances to se a bigger variation of birds.
